Two Sisters, One Mission...

GLOBAL DOMINATION! Okay, well not exactly "global domination" in the sense that we want to take over and rule the world like Napolean or Alexander The Great - though we think we could rock out gold armor really well. We just want to SEE it. We want to experience it, touch it, taste it, and live it. After taking out loans to study in the UK & Mexico while in college, we've got the travel itch, and BAD. We'd do just about anything to be the STA Travel Interns for 2009...

Girl POWA!

Quite possibly one of the best products ever made for female travelers and women on the go. Go-Girl has actually developed a "female urination device" that lets you stand while "going". You may be telling yourself that peeing through plastic is not the ideal situation, but what about when you're stuck on a mountain in Asia or on a road trip and can't find a rest stop? When you gotta go ladies, ya gotta go.

Walk, Don’t Ride, London's Underground

Great article from Jaunted.com!

You might think that the London underground train system--also called the tube--is a convenient and fast way to get around the city. But in fact, it's making you fat.

What you really need to know is how many calories you can burn by walking between stations instead. So an insurance company has released a map of the subway that shows how many steps there are between each station.

More Morelia, please!

Four years ago, I did the unexpected. I told my family I’d be leaving to go live in Mexico for a month. Some people were really supportive of me, and others were apprehensive. And, I’m pretty sure there were those who thought I’d be going on a vacation, full of margaritas and all-you-can-eat buffets. Looking back on it, I am so proud of myself for not listening to other people’s fears, and having the courage to travel on my own. Mexico is so much more than the places we’ve come to know like Cancun and Acapulco. It’s a country full of artists, poets, musicians, scenery, architecture, religion, and some seriously good food.

The majority of my time in Mexico was spent in Morelia, in the state of Michoacán (I know, that’s a lot of M’s – their soccer team is also called the Monarcas!). Morelia is a great city that combines the timeless architecture of the European colonial era with a thriving, young energy – it has over eleven colleges and universities! The main cathedral, and many of the other historic buildings were built with a pink stone called “Cantera Rose,” and during sunset they look like they’re glowing. It’s amazing! Definitely worth a photo. There are also fireworks every Friday night in the zocalo, the city center – and if you go early, you can snag a seat at one of the sidewalk cafes and have dinner AND a show. Can’t beat that!

Have I mentioned the food? My mouth is already watering. The best thing about real Mexican food is that everything is so fresh. There are several outdoor markets where the locals buy their food, and you can find everything from bouquets of flowers and huge rinds of cheese to piles of chilies and fruits that practically fall out of their peels.

My favorite thing about Morelia is their public transportation – the infamous “combis” (comb-beez). These are converted Volkswagon buses that can fit anywhere from 15-20 people (though when they get that full, you definitely make some new friends!). Best part? They’ll take you anywhere in Morelia, and all you have to shell out is 5 pesos, which, with the pretty sweet exchange rate means you can go anywhere for 50 cents! Needless to say, I took full advantage of the combis, and though there’s no map for them, all you have to do is ask a local and they’ll point you in the right direction.

Gracias, Morelia, for teaching me how to appreciate real Mexican food and providing me with one of the best souvenir logo tees ever: a bright red monstrosity that reads: “Ai Guas In” Morelia, Mexico. Classic. -- Caitlin McKeighen

Liverpool: In my ears and in my eyes

If you’re staying in London for any length of time, it would absolutely be a crime not to take advantage of Britain’s great railway system and visit Liverpool. If you take the early train from London Euston, you can make the trip in just a little over two hours and end up in Lime Street station by 10:30 in the morning with a whole day of sightseeing ahead of you! If you were out at a pub the night before, you could always catch up on your missed beauty sleep on the way, but I wouldn’t recommend it, because you’d be missing some spectacular scenery.

First stop in Liverpool, if you’re a Beatles fan, has to be the Magical Mystery tour. The Fab Four were originally from the port city, and people flock from all over the world to pay homage. If the name of the tour wasn’t cool enough, picture this: you, riding around Liverpool, visiting legendary places like Penny Lane and Strawberry Field in a big, yellow, psychedelically-painted bus. I don’t think the Beatles would have had it any other way. You even get a “Ticket To Ride.” Along the way, you’ll also get to see John Lennon’s childhood home and the church where John and Paul met for the first time. You can even finish off your Beatles experience by having a pint in the renowned Cavern Club, known for giving the boys from Liverpool their start.

With Yellow Submarine stuck in your head all day long (oh hush, you love it), you can get a feel for the city by checking out some of the area shops on Liverpool Street. Have a chat with some salespeople or some locals, and you’ll get to experience the Liverpudlian accent, and see if you can understand what they’re saying. It sounds like a combination of Irish, British and Scottish accents to me, and definitely takes some practice to decipher!

Afterwards, head on over to the Albert Dock where you can check out the Merseyside Maritime Museum to better understand Liverpool’s history and connection to the sea, or learn about the city’s role in the slave trade by following the Slavery History Trail. There are also tons of little shops and craft carts to check out. Whatever you decide to do, make sure to stop in at the Pump House for a great view of the waterfront while you grab some lunch and another pint. Yes, you can have another. You’re in England! The building used to pump water between the docks, hence its name, and you definitely won’t forget you’re among sea-faring folk once you’re inside. It’s popular with locals and tourists alike, and you can get great steak and Guinness pie before catching your train back to London.

Liverpool is a thriving city with so much to offer. If you’ve got more than a day, consider sticking around for a bit and experiencing the art museums and maybe even a football match! I will always treasure the time I got to spend in Liverpool, traveling in style to some of pop music’s most hallowed spots and grubbing it with the locals.
